My friend Michelle is a top contender for one of my favorite people in the world. Pretty, fun, life of the party, yoga addict, vegan…do you love her already?! Michelle also has grit and depth, and a compassion that comes from meeting life’s challenges head on. That’s my friend Michelle. And I think her house is just as awesome as she is!
In the land of dirt, cacti (or is it cactuses?), and dry, endless heat, Michelle’s house is one of the most cool and calm retreats I’ve seen. While it’s common for Arizonans to take color inspiration from our desert landscape, Michelle defied the odds and used cool, beachy colors. I am always inspired by people who break the “rules” of design. (Remember, the first rule of design is to break all the rules!)
Although we don’t often realize it, we do feel cooler in spaces that have cool tones such as the silvery gray in Michelle’s family room. Yellow and gray is a fave color pairing of mine. Together the two tones are calming and serene. Gray is the new khaki, my go-to neutral. This is Silver Fox by Benjamin Moore, which happens to be a fave of mine. I used it throughout a relative’s house and she loves it!
As soon as I arrived for the photo shoot, Michelle’s little guy Jack started showing me his cool raincoat. I couldn’t resist!
Michelle’s husband Chris has a hobby that suites Michelle’s design crave perfectly. He is a skilled woodworker and artist. Chris designed and built this entertainment center and shelving using quarter sown white oak veneer. The cute little owl storage bin made by 3 Sprouts is home for all of Jack’s dress up clothes.
The master bath is the definition of calm perfection! A modern soaking tub, white subway tiles, a custom vanity, and a glass block wall creates the perfect escape for mom.
Chris built this beautiful vanity too! The modern drawer pulls are very “Michelle”.
Our tour just wouldn’t be complete without showing off Jack’s Cat-in-the-Hat bedroom. The bedding and bath accessories are from Pottery Barn.
